  1. DESQview API (advanced programming interface)

  3. The DESQview API is described in the Version 2.0 manual on page 
  4. 193 under the heading "A DESQview-specific program...".  
  5.  
  6. Using the API, your program can access the features of DESQview 
  7. from the system level.  This can allow your program to spawn new 
  8. tasks, pass information to other windows and control the size and 
  9. shape of windows.  One window can be made a subtask of another.  
  10. It is also possible using API to exercize full control over the 
  11. system so that your program becomes in effect the front end menu 
  12. of the system with DESQview providing windowing, memory 
  13. management and multitasking under the surface.

  15. Quarterdeck plans to provide a programmers reference to the API 
  16. during the latter part of '87.  Until that time, there are 
  17. several other references available:

  20. "Appendix J - DESQview Version 2.0 manual"

  22. Appendix J contains general programming information regarding 
  23. interfacing programs to DESQview including Assembler source code 
  24. for several of the most basic DESQview calls.  For programmers 
  25. that simply want to make their programs run very well in DESQview 
  26. while retaining the ability to run in DOS outside of the DESQview 
  27. environment, this selection of calls provides all that most 
  28. programmers will ever need.  It is important to note that these 
  29. calls are also supported by earlier versions of DESQview.  More 
  30. advanced API calls may require the use of DESQview 2.0 or above.

  33. DESQview Bulletin Board System:

  35. Some source and object code files for implementation of the basic 
  36. calls is available from the DESQview Bulletin Board System.  Full 
  37. access to the BBS is restricted to users with priority service or 
  38. users with registered, serial-numbered copies of DESQview.

  40. The Quarterdeck Bulletin Board system operates 24 hours a day, 
  41. seven days a week.  The telephone number is (213)396-3904.  
  42. Supported baud rates are 2400/1200/300.  Preferred communications 
  43. parameters are: 8 data bits, No Parity, 1 stop bit.  You should 
  44. plan to download using one of the following error-free protocols: 
  45. XMODEM, XMODEM CRC, YMODEM or KERMIT.

  54. code examples (in Assembler) of many of the API functions. Does 
  55. not include any disks and is not really a substitute for an API 
  56. Toolkit or reference manual. However, since the cost is 
  57. reasonable, this is an excellent source to discover the 
  58. possibilities of programming under the API.
